PATIALA: Punjabi University, Patiala, has become the first state-run varsity in
Punjab to ban the entry of two-wheelers on the campus. Bowing to students' demand, the authorities on Monday agreed to impose a complete ban both on cars and two-wheelers on the campus.
While the ban on entry of cars was imposed last week, restrictions on two-wheelers will come into effect on January 1, 2016.
"Students had demanded a ban on the entry of Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles. But we decided that instead of selectively imposing a ban, the university will put a blanket ban on entry of all two-wheelers from January 1," said Punjabi University dean, student welfare, Kulbir Singh Dhillon.
Saying that vehicles owned by employees and teachers would be allowed, dean Dhillon added entry of two-wheelers couldn't be restricted during the current session, as authorities had to arrange logistics to develop a separate two-wheeler parking adjacent to the main gate of the campus.
"Our parking lot exclusively for cars is ready and has been put to use. But it will take us at least two months to develop parking lot for two-wheelers," he added.
For the past six days, the students, protesting under banner of Democratic Students Organization (DSO), were demanding ban on entry of cars and Bullet motorcycles owned by students. Students have forcibly locked vice-chancellor office consecutively for six days.
The agitation on issue of entry of vehicles erupted following two roadside accidental deaths and over a dozen accidents on the campus in the past two months.
